VCU Music is proud to present Mozart’s The Magic Flute as our Spring 2023 Opera. The 2023 Opera is the final performance under Opera director Professor Melanie Day, prior to her retirement. Performances will take place on Friday, April 28th at 7:00pm and Sunday, April 30th at 4:00pm in the Singleton Center for Performing Arts.
In honor of Professor Day’s tenure and commitment to the Opera, the Spring 2023 Opera will be free to attend!
One of the greatest operas ever written, Mozart’s timeless classic The Magic Flute concerns the search for truth and reason, love and enlightenment. As an allegory or fairy tale, this thoroughly delightful opera follows the adventures of Prince Tamino and the bird-catcher Papageno on their quest to rescue Pamina. With an intriguing mixture of ancient Egypt combined with symbolism from Freemasonry, Mozart’s masterpiece thrills us with childlike simplicity, emotional complexity, dark foreboding and hilarious comedy!
