About the Program

The minor in painting and printmaking provides basic and advanced training in both material disciplines, with access to the same facilities used by students in the major. Any courses across the department may be taken to fulfill the 18-credit requirement. All students must complete the Art Foundation program before being admitted to the minor.

The Department of Painting and Printmaking is a vibrant community that prepares students to be professional artists and participate in a wide range of roles in the field of contemporary art. When you choose to study in Painting and Printmaking, you’ll join a studio program that’s like a laboratory, where you’ll investigate and redefine your personal vision and its relationship to visual culture. You’ll learn the basics of painting, printmaking, drawing and their relationship to other media and use elective options to create an experience that is either broad in focus or highly specialized. You’ll discover a range of aesthetic and conceptual choices, and better understand the issues and criteria informing artmaking today. You’ll also develop skills in critical analysis and learn how to articulate and justify your ideas both visually and verbally. You’ll have access to leading figures in the contemporary art world as they visit to discuss their work, critique your work and conduct workshops.
