Christopher Irving

Assistant Professor

Department of Communication Arts

Christopher Irving returned to his alma mater (Art History, 1999) after establishing himself as a comic book historian and journalist–a career he started while a VCU student. After earning a Masters in Comparative Literature at Brooklyn College (2012), Irving returned to VCU to teach Visual Communications, Star Wars Decoded, The Superhero Decoded, Comic Book History, and other lecture courses for the Communication Arts department. His focus is on creating a holistic approach towards the study of media that combines film, comic books, television, and other new media with cultural and social history. He is currently a student in the Media, Arts, and Text PhD program at VCU, and continues to publish and produce comics related objects through his company The Drawn Word.
