VCUarts and The Anderson are pleased to present Angel Wings, an exhibition from Ellyx Martinez (Painting and Printmaking BFA, 2023) on view on the bottom floor of The Anderson.
Angel Wings is Ellyx Martinez’s first solo show composed of works made during residency and travel last summer. The show began as Martinez, recovering their mestizo identity and ancestral past in New Mexico, made a 100 mile journey on foot through the landscapes their family has known for generations. Gathering stories, photographs, memories, and time with the land, they flew to Spain to process and draw. Continuing their research into the Southeast upon their return to VCU, they made work from memory, stitching together the range of life they witnessed.
