The Department of Art Education presents visiting speaker Dr. Louisa Penfold, a Lecturer and Co-Chair of Arts and Learning at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her research and practice focus on contemporary art, early childhood education, and play across schools, museums, and public spaces. Louisa is the Project Director of Project Zero’s ‘Art/Play’, an NEA-funded study looking at the integration of modern and contemporary art practices into public school curriculum. Run as a partnership between the Department of Early Childhood at Boston Public Schools, the Smithsonian Learning Lab, MoMA, and the Harvard Art Museums, Art/Play is looking at how contemporary art and children’s play can be connected through curriculum design and professional development opportunities for teachers.

Dr. Louisa Penfold will be hosting a free Cardboard Workshop open to all educators in Central Virginia and VCU students on Friday, October 6, 2023, from 4:00pm – 7:00pm at the Murry N. DePillars Building (1000 W Broad St, Richmond, VA 23220).

In this workshop, participants will– discover the importance of art and play in childhood development, learn about two amazing modern female artists: Charlotte Poseneske and Louise Nevelson, experiment with cardboard as a creative material, and learn about strategies for designing, facilitating, and reflecting on the children’s art experiences that draw on contemporary and modern art practices.
