Brood IX is an album of recordings made by Kinetic Imaging Interim Chair, Stephen Vitiello at Peters Mountain in Monroe County, West Virginia in June of 2020. These recordings feature the sounds of the area’s 17-year cicadas (this group, classified as Brood IX) which emerge from the ground in late May and fill their surroundings with a “sonic wash” through early July. This lot of cicadas only fill the region with their resonant chirps every 17 years.
Vitiello frequents this spot in the winters to record rare wind phenomena. However, on this trip, there was little wind and the roar of the brood filled the trees surrounding the foot of the mountain.
Brood IX is available on bandcamp through Australian record label, Room40.
