    In the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion with a concentration in fashion design, you’ll learn to meld form and function by balancing your artistic creativity with the fashion market.

  • Bachelor of Arts in Fashion with a concentration in fashion merchandising

    The concentration in fashion merchandising requires a strong background in marketing, business and specialized professional courses with an emphasis on globalism. Students are directed toward assignments that will develop their skills in research, writing, presentation and critical thinking.

Graphic Design

    The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design program will require you to explore design methods, processes, materials and language; broaden your understanding of the diversity and scope of design practices; and customize your educational experience through an array of departmental electives aligned with active faculty research.

Interior Design

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design

    Students will study the principles of space, form, color and light as the foundations. Investigations of building codes, materials, construction methods and documentation will complement studies in the history of interior environments, design theory, business procedures and current professional movements.

Kinetic Imaging

    The minor in Animation is housed in the Department of Kinetic Imaging and includes relevant elective options from majors across the School of the Arts.

  • Minor in Sound Design

    The minor in Sound Design is a collaboration between the Department of Kinetic Imaging and the Department of Theatre, and includes relevant elective options from majors across the School of the Arts.

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Kinetic Imaging

    The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Kinetic Imaging courses cover video art, animation, sound design, emerging media and the many combinations and extensions of these areas. It is a highly flexible major, offering the opportunity to build a more individualized study that includes other studio and intellectual interests.

Music

  • Bachelor of Arts in Music

    In the Bachelor of Arts in Music program you can combine music with other areas of study. At the center of the instructional program are courses in performance (lessons, masterclasses and ensembles); musicianship skills and analysis (theory, aural skills, keyboard skills and conducting); and history and repertoire.

  • Minor in Music

    Any VCU student may declare a minor in music with approval from the Department of Music. The minor in music is comprised of 18 credits distributed among the areas of music history and theory, ensemble performance, private lessons and music electives.

  • Bachelor of Music in Music with a concentration in music education/instrumental

    In the Bachelor of Music with a concentration in music education/instrumental program you will develop your personal musicality while you gain practical classroom teaching experience through student-teaching internships and work in the field.

  • Bachelor of Music in Music with a concentration in music education/vocal-choral

    In the Bachelor of Music with a concentration in music education/vocal-choral program you will develop your personal musicality while you gain practical classroom teaching experience through student-teaching internships and work in the field. You will study lyric diction and the music education curriculum, which includes choral methods and rehearsal techniques.

  • Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in Media Scoring

    Explore composition techniques, innovative music production, and essential industry practices to prepare you for a dynamic career as a composer for visual media.

  • Bachelor of Music in Music with a concentration in performance/guitar

    The Bachelor of Music with a concentration in performance/guitar will teach you how to develop the skills, concepts and sensitivities that are essential to being a professional musician.

  • Bachelor of Music in Music with a concentration in performance/jazz studies

    The Bachelor of Music with a concentration in performance/jazz studies will teach you how to develop the skills, concepts and sensitivities that are essential to being a professional musician.

  • Bachelor of Music in Music with a concentration in performance/piano

    The Bachelor of Music with a concentration in performance/piano will teach you how to develop the skills, concepts and sensitivities that are essential to being a professional musician. Included are courses in music theory, aural skills, music history, conducting and applied study in your principal performing medium.

  • Bachelor of Music in Music with a concentration in performance/strings

    The Bachelor of Music with a concentration in performance/strings will teach you how to develop the skills, concepts and sensitivities that are essential to being a professional musician.  

  • Bachelor of Music in Music with a concentration in performance/voice

    The Bachelor of Music with a concentration in performance/voice will teach you how to develop the skills, concepts and sensitivities that are essential to being a professional musician.

  • Bachelor of Music in Music with a concentration in performance/winds and percussion

    The Bachelor of Music with a concentration in performance/winds and percussion will teach you how to develop the skills, concepts and sensitivities that are essential to being a professional musician.  

Painting + Printmaking

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking

    The Department of Painting + Printmaking is a large, diverse and vibrant community of artists, scholars and students. When you choose this major, you’re part of an academic studio program that’s like a working lab, where you’ll investigate and redefine your personal visual culture.

  • Minor in Painting and Printmaking

    The minor in painting and printmaking provides basic and advanced training in both material disciplines, with access to the same facilities used by students in the major. Any courses across the department may be taken to fulfill the 18-credit requirement. All students must complete the Art Foundation program before being admitted to the minor.

Photography + Film

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Film with a concentration in filmmaking

    Students in the filmmaking concentration will have access to Super 8mm, 16mm and digital cameras and sound technology, and graduate with a number of films that you’ve written, produced, shot, directed, edited and publicly screened. You will graduate with a number of short works in film and new media you have written, produced, directed, lensed and edited, and you will have ample opportunity to learn a range of professional crew positions.

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Film with a concentration in photography

    Students in the photography concentration will be exposed to working photographers, filmmakers and industry trends through seminars, guest lectures, field trips and workshops. Your courses will include both theoretical study and hands-on experience in the fields of fine art, studio and location photography.

Sculpture + Extended Media

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Extended Media

    The BFA program in Sculpture + Extended Media offers a fluid and dynamic educational experience that reflects the vital landscape of art making today. Our program is initiated with a progressive cycle of classes, originating with manual and intellectual skill development, and arcing toward the ultimate goal of developing a complex, nuanced and individual approach to art upon graduation.

  • Minor in Sculpture

    The minor in sculpture allows students from outside of the program to enrich their degrees with rigorous and engaging coursework in Sculpture + Extended Media.

Theatre

  • Bachelor of Arts in Theatre

    The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre combines theatre with the liberal arts. Students minor in other subjects, or follow a directed course of study in various disciplines, from directing to playwriting to theater management.

  • Minor in Theatre

    The minor in Theatre is available to any VCU student who is not pursuing a BA or BFA in the Department of Theatre. With a wide variety of classes available, this minor can be suited to a student’s interests.

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a concentration in performance

    The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a concentration in performance includes classes in acting, movement, improvisation, stage combat, voice/speech and dialects, and acting for the camera in addition to other theatre related courses.

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a concentration in costume design/technical production

    Students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a concentration in costume design/technical production program have many opportunities to work nationally, regionally, on our mainstage and in our student theater.  

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a concentration in lighting design/technical production

    Students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a concentration in lighting design/technical production program have many opportunities to work nationally, regionally, on our mainstage and in our student theater.

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a concentration in performance/musical theatre

    The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a concentration in performance/musical theatre includes classes in musical theatre performance, musical theatre history, dance, acting and movement, in addition to vocal lessons and other theatre related courses.  

  • Minor in Musical Theatre

    The minor in musical theatre is available to any VCU student who is not pursuing a BA or BFA in the Department of Theatre. This program is of particular interest to students studying dance or music who desire to further their performance abilities in this area. 

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a concentration in scene design/technical production

    Students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a concentration in scene design/technical production program have many opportunities to work nationally, regionally, on our mainstage and in our student theater.

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a concentration in stage management/technical production

    The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a concentration in stage management/technical production program provides a professionally intense production oriented program for students serious about entering the field of stage management.
