The Department of Art Education at Virginia Commonwealth University promotes meaningful art instruction. Our faculty and students actively engage with the art world through education in local and global communities.

Through art-based service-learning, visual culture studies, critical thinking, exhibition, assessment, curriculum, critical theory and emerging digital technologies, you’ll discover meaning in the world around us.

We place a strong emphasis on fostering interdisciplinary connections, both within the School of the Arts and the broader university. Through research and instruction, we engage students and ourselves in traditional and innovative inquiry methods, leaving our mark on the art education profession.

A degree in Art Education opens doors to a life deeply immersed in the arts. Most art education students enter the teaching profession, but others pursue work as art consultants, art therapists, arts administrators, museum personnel or art-related business positions.
