The Theatre and Dance Department is a vibrant community centered on both practice and research. Through rigorous work in the classroom, in the studio and on the stage, you’ll build the artistry, discipline and creative confidence to thrive as a performing arts professional—whether as a skilled performer, designer or scholar.

At VCUarts, our comprehensive training in theatre or dance prepares you for the demands of a professional career. You’ll also have many opportunities to participate in socially engaged practices, creative coding, video performance and much more.

Our Dance Program

Here, we champion bold, innovative work—stretching the potential of the art form, cultivating new audiences and expanding what dance can be. We bring VCU and the Richmond community face-to-face with the full range of contemporary dance, illuminating the history and ideas that shape it. As a Dance major, you’ll learn from faculty who are experienced dance artists and educators, training in modern and contemporary forms while exploring improvisation, composition and choreography. For more than 80 years, we’ve cultivated performers, designers and educators in a nationally recognized, NAST-accredited program. Mainstage productions are the centerpiece of your VCUarts experience—immersive, collaborative projects staged on campus and across Richmond’s thriving arts community that prepare you to launch a meaningful and successful career across the country.
