This exhibit explored themes of creative agency, relief in times of anguish, and radical joy. Art is a powerful tool which builds a shelter of joy and expression in the midst of a storm.

Black Fidelity: Crafted in the Storm was the 2026 edition of BASE’s annual Black Fidelity Juried Exhibition. VCUarts student artists displayed works at The Anderson throughout Black History Month, on view from February 6th-February 28th, 2026.

Exhibition Statement:

This exhibit will explore themes of creative agency, relief in times of anguish, and radical joy. We ask the question: What is the role of the creative in times of uncertainty? Art is a powerful tool which builds a shelter of joy and expression in the midst of a storm. It connects communities through shared human sentiments. It creates portals to connect us to the experiences of people from the past and reaches the hearts of people in future. Art has the power to introduce one to a deeper version of themself. Artists wield this magnificent tool every time they create. Join us as we brave the storm through the power of artistic expression.
