Brittany Johnson is a Signature Scratchboard Artist with the International Society of Scratchboard artists and is working on becoming a Master Scratchboard Artist. She uses a variety of sharp tools including tattoo needles, fiberglass brushes, and an x-acto knife to scratch away the black ink and reveal the white clay underneath. Occasionally she will add colored inks to her portraits, which is very labor intensive as it takes 5 to 6 rounds of inking and scratching before the portrait is complete. This medium allows for highly detailed photorealistic portraits of plants and animals. Her pet portraits capture the spirit of the animal she is depicting. Her work has almost a 3-D quality in that you feel you can reach out and touch the animal.
