Steve Ashby

Steve Ashby began playing guitar at the age of 12. After two years of private lessons and three years teaching himself the intricacies of rock guitar, Ashby began studying classical guitar with Keith Stevens, head of the guitar department at James Madison University. After high school, he studied at VCU, where he received his undergraduate degree for classical guitar performance in 1999, followed by his master’s degree in 2005. During his study at VCU, Ashby performed for master classes given by Scott Tenant, Jason Vieaux, Aldo Lagrutta and Larry Snitzler.

Ashby has been teaching since 2000, focusing on the development of the student’s musical voice by emphasizing technique and an understanding of composition used within the student’s repertoire.
