We invited VCUarts Art Education alumni, as well as Art Education Department adjunct, emeritus, and current faculty to participate in this juried exhibition. Artists were encouraged to submit works that speak to the idea of presence and absence, nostalgia, longing, or the interplay between creation and creator.
“Wish You Were Here” is not just an exhibition; it is an invitation to witness the extraordinary talent, often unseen, flourishing within our academic community.
Our juror was David Burton, PhD, who taught in the art education department at Virginia Commonwealth University for 40 years. Author of Exhibiting Student Art: The Essential Guide for Teachers, Burton explores the enormous power exhibitions have in influencing learning in visual arts education. Burton was elected to the NAEA Distinguished Fellows in 2005 and the VAEA Distinguished Fellows in 2012. He received the NAEA Higher Education Art Educator Award (2000) and many others.
A special thank you goes to Veronica Hicks, David Burton, Morgan Zahabi, Jonathan Clarke, Gabriel Farrerio, R.M. Livingston, and Lia New who put together this amazing exhibition!
