Somewhere in a land far, far away (Henrico County), merchants and craftspeople roamed the same walkways as warriors and fae. Crowds cheered heartily for bike jousting, while others literally “fished for compliments” out of a pool supervised by mermaids.
This was the inaugural RVA Renaissance Faire by Virago Alley, which took place April 18 and 19 at Dorey Park. Virginia Commonwealth University alumni, students and faculty were deeply involved in organizing and managing the event, which had a distinctly local flair to it.
“Richmond is a perfect city for something like this,” said Chiara Scuro, RVA Ren Faire’s president and a VCU alum with a degree in kinetic imaging from the School of the Arts. “We’re the weird art kid city. We’re the underground, scuzzy, punk city, and the Richmond faire is definitely not like other ren faires.”
