Sasha Waters, professor of Photography and Film, will contextualize her latest documentary film, Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World, sharing insights into the making of the first cinematic portrait of the beloved American poet. Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World reflects Waters’ larger body of work as an artist drawn to figures who are outsiders and arrive at recognition on their own terms.

About Sasha Waters
A moving image artist trained in photography and 16mm cinema, the films of Sasha Waters pursue ecstatic, metaphorical realism from the relations and materials of ordinary life. Her most recent feature documentary, Garry Winogrand: All Things are Photographable, won a Special Jury Prize at the SXSW Film Festival, aired on the acclaimed PBS series American Masters and screened theatrically and at festivals across the U.S. Her 2024 short Ghost Protists had its European premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam and was included in exhibitions in São Paolo, London, Uppsala, Budapest, Cornwall, New Orleans and Chicago. She is a Professor in the Department of Photography and Film at VCU’s School of the Arts.
