The Anderson and VCUarts are pleased to announce Sold South, an exhibition of artwork by Fashion Design student Rashida Shabazz, May ’28. The exhibition will be on view from February 5th – March 4th, 2027, with an opening reception on Friday, February 5th from 5-7pm. This exhibition features work created by the artist through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).
Rashida Shabazz, a mixed media artist in VCU’s Fashion Design program, explores Black history, generational inheritance, spirituality, and creative freedom through textiles, painting, collage, poetry, garments, and installation. Drawing from her experience growing up in Richmond, Virginia, the exhibition questions inheritance through grief, tradition, and cultural practices. With a combination of personal and historical reflection, Rashida examines how history can be transmuted through artistic practice.
