Depth of Field

An original discussion series where production meets profession.

VCUarts Cinema Program Director and Associate Professor, Yossera Bouchtia, and Assistant Professor of Media Production & Sequence Coordinator, Robert Milazzo are collaborating on an original, monthly guest zoom-conversation series designed to bring students across all VCU moving-image disciplines – Media Production, Cinema, Photo/Film, Kinetic Imaging – closer to professional practitioners working at the front lines of the industry.

Join us Friday, November 6th at 3:00 pm in The Temple Building for a conversation with Academy Award-nominated, eight-time Emmy nominated, and two-time Emmy winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger, a pioneering force in nonfiction filmmaking for more than three decades.

This event is open to all students, but seats are limited. Please RSVP to confirm your attendance by emailing Rob Milazzo – milazzor@vcu.edu.

About the Speaker

Joe Berlinger is the creator of Academy Award-nominated PARADISE LOST Trilogy, which helped lead to the release of the wrongfully convicted West Memphis Three. In October 2025, The New York Times called Paradise Lost “perhaps the most chilling of all true-crime documentaries.”

Berlinger’s METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER, which redefined the “rockumentary” genre and is widely considered by critics as one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll films of all time.

Berlinger holds a streak of chart-topping work on Netflix, attracting enormous audiences with 19 Netflix productions. Since Netflix introduced its top ten rankings, all of Berlinger’s films and series have debuted in the Netflix Top 10, often at #1.
