Hawa Stwodah is an assistant professor of Fashion Design. She is a designer, illustrator and educator whose career has spanned many sectors within the fashion industry. She has worked in the United States and the Middle East, collaborating with companies in Europe and Asia, consulting on experimental design development using innovative textiles for menswear, women’s sportswear, activewear, healthcare providers and a series of entrepreneurial endeavors for infant accessories. She produced illustrations for the textbook “Fashionomics,” used as an instructional device at universities in both the United States and Asia. Her design aesthetic is influenced heavily by traditional surface design techniques, and the notion of layers as both materials and meanings. She has exhibited nationally and internationally examining social behaviors through the lens of surface design. Stwodah graduated with her MFA in design and BFA in fashion design from VCUarts.
