Veronica Hicks, Ph.D., has comprehensive experience and expertise in art education. Dr. Hicks believes that positive radical transformation of the field begins with examining art teacher education and developing new ways in which pre-service art teachers are prepared to connect, provide choices, and empathize with their future students. Her research examines race, gender, and ability dynamics in art education, and questions the policy and power structures in teaching and learning. She also maintains an active research agenda centered on the experiences of women of color art teachers and art students with disabilities, resilience in pre-service art teachers, and art education narratives published as comics and other graphic formats. Dr. Hicks earned her Dual Doctor of Philosophy in Art Education and Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies from Pennsylvania State University. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Arts in Art Education with an Emphasis in Special Populations from Moore College of Art & Design. Dr. Hicks is a former PreK-12 art teacher and is Virginia Art Education Association’s Research Representative.
