Kimberly Guthrie is an Associate Professor of Fashion Design + Merchandising. Her research interests include sustainable fashion and eco-fashion design education, based on the belief that fashion is an avenue through which many aspects of life and culture can be investigated, celebrated and represented. Her teaching areas include draping, patternmaking, construction, tailoring, collection development, product development, computers for fashion, technical design, trend forecasting, fashion show production and sustainable strategies for fashion design. She is also the founder and study abroad director of the VCUarts Fashion in Florence summer program. She has presented research at the Fifth International Conference on Design Principles and Practices in Rome, Italy, the 15th International Conference at RDM Campus Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and was awarded $3000 through a Dean’s Exploratory Research Grant to examine and determine how fashion programs need to address and analyze how the fashion industry’s reaction to becoming more sustainable will affect the content and instruction of what is taught to fashion students. Guthrie earned her MA in art education and BFA in fashion design from VCUarts.
