Graduate study in art history at VCU takes a theoretically informed approach to the visual arts with an emphasis on modern Western (since the Renaissance) and non-Western areas. Degree programs include the PhD, with historical and curatorial tracks, and the MA, with three tracks: historical studies, architectural studies, and museum studies.
The graduate program encourages critical engagement with art historical theories and methods, the acquisition of in-depth knowledge of chosen subject area, professional development and the development of advanced skills in oral and written communication.
Graduate students participate in seminars and write MA theses and Phd dissertations on a broad range of topics that correspond to areas of faculty research. Potential applicants to the MA and Phd programs are advised to correspond with faculty members whose research matches their own areas of interest.
