I completed this project in the Fall of 2024 in the Imagery for Horror course with Kelly Alder. The assignment for this piece was to redesign (or design) a book cover within the genre of horror/gothic/psychological thriller, etc. for a story–or short story. I chose Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery because I so enjoyed the nuances of it, the immense impact her work (as a whole) has had on the genre, the questions this story considers in relation to the core principles of works of its kind, and the uniqueness of its plot. I really wanted to try capturing the visceral response I felt while reading it.
