Photo Senior, Aija Bowditch, was selected to feature her work, Bonfire, in the 2025 Undergraduate Juried Exhibition
Bonfire, inspired by Jean Baudrillard’s post-modernist concept of hyperreality, emphasizes how the screen has now replaced the fire, and how we interact with our global community through solitude. The screens are arranged in a shape akin to a bonfire, in front of a boarded up fireplace: a poor representation of an actual bonfire. The juxtaposition of the soft and hazy fluidness that is felt in real life and the static images of 4K images of fire creates a jarring feeling to the natural vision of the human eye. The shadow of the blinds sprawl across the room, illustrating a lack of privacy as the wifi box softly glows in the background, giving life to the online world as the subjects together in the room lack any sense of community.
