The piece is an illustrated magazine cover for American Scientific; specifically for the recent scientific achievement of reintroducing Przewalski’s horse back to its native range. Przewalski’s horse is an ancient breed, being the only true wild horse species, so to emphasize this, the composition and color palette is inspired by old world Kazak rugs. The dueling images each represent the narrative of the native ecosystem, and how important this key species is to its environment.

This artwork was created for the VCUarts Scientific Illustration course, instructed by Professor Kat Thompson.
