When Morgan told her dad that she wanted to pursue a career as an actor, she was expecting him to suggest the typical “get a backup plan.’ Instead, he said, ‘Go for it, because I think you could be successful and if I didn’t, I’d tell you the truth.'”
As for VCU, “Everything I heard about the program made me love it more,” including a staff that instilled professionalism and prepared us to have a career.” Morgan started working professionally before graduation. In addition to mainstage shows at VCU, she worked in several of the local theatres.
When Morgan was a Junior, one of her senior friends suggested she enter The Next Great Voice Talent, a national competition. “There was one seat left in their car pool and they probably should not have brought me, because I won and was signed!” Her first radio job was for Hooters.
When asked the difference between being a stage actor and a voice talent, Morgan replied, “Authenticity is everything. As an actor, if we aren’t fully invested, the audience can sense it and if you’re lying on mic, they can hear it. Whether in commercials or cartoons, tell the truth in an authentic way.”
Before moving to NYC, Morgan spent two years in DC, where she did a sketch called “Go to College” for Collegehumor (now called Dropout) with Michelle Obama and a fellow VCU grad Mahlon Raoufi (BFA 2015). Alumni Lauren Davis (BFA 2014) was working for Collegehumor and suggested them. It was shot at the White House in 2015. “Michelle and Jay Pharoah had raps and Mahlon and I did robot dances.”
After six years, Morgan moved to Los Angeles, “I was so consumed in my life. There was not a lot of balance and I wanted to live in a place with sunshine, more space and less per-square-foot rent.” So far things are going well. She’s recorded spots for Nature Valley, Big Lots, Sea World, Trojan and Dollar General. Her voice can also be heard on the animated series Lil Wild and she recently made her in-show narration debut in Season 2, Episode 7 of How I Caught My Killer on Hulu.
On June 1, 2024 she married fellow actor Jay Colbain, who she saw in a show in New York. “Acting is my passion and my gift but it’s not all,” Morgan explains a rich inner life is her reason for success.
