This talk presents a practice-based exploration of artistic work with artificial intelligence. It surveys AI-related projects developed since 2019, examining image, text, robotic, and material processes, and critically reflects on authorship, agency, and the cultural and ecological implications of generative AI.

About the Speaker:
Varvara Guljajeva, Ph.D., is an artist and scholar working at the intersection of art, technology and society. She is associate professor of Kinetic Imaging at VCUarts Qatar. Her research has been presented at leading international conferences such as SIGGRAPH, CVPR and ISEA, and her artistic work has been exhibited worldwide at institutions including Ars Electronica, ZKM, the Barbican, MAD New York, FACT Liverpool, Santa Mònica Barcelona and the Onassis Cultural Centre in Athens. As an artist, she primarily works as one half of the artist duo Varvara & Mar, co-founded in 2009 with Mar Canet.

Varvara holds a Ph.D. in art from the Estonian Academy of Arts; her dissertation, From Interaction to Post-Participation: The Disappearing Role of the Active Participant, was recognized by Leonardo Labs in 2020. Previously, she held professorships at HKUST(GZ), the Estonian Academy of Arts, and Elisava, and was a visiting researcher at CityU’s XRL, IAMAS, Liverpool John Moores University, the University of Art and Design Linz, and the Max Planck Center for Humans & Machines.
