The Anderson and VCUarts are pleased to present Surface & Signal: Exploring the Space Between Painting & New Media, a pop-up exhibition curated by SHAWNÉ MICHAELAIN HOLLOWAY & Jacob Todd Broussard featuring students from the Painting and Printmaking “Painting Strategies” and Kinetic Imaging “Research & Production II” classes. The exhibition will be on view during regular hours (12-6 pm) this Thursday, March 6 with an opening reception 4-6 pm.
What happens when the language of painting collides with the tools and tactics of new media? Surface & Signal is a weekend-long experiment in process, materiality, and collective making, bringing together students from Painting and Printmaking “Painting Strategies” and Kinetic Imaging’s “Research & Production II” to test the boundaries of their respective practices. Through a series of workshops, participants engage in extended media, challenge assumptions about form and discipline, and explore hybrid approaches that blur the lines between. tradition and technology. How does the immediacy of digital media alter the way we understand gesture, surface, and composition? Can the act of painting be expanded through time-based, interactive, or kinetic strategies? This exhibition is a snapshot of that inquiry—a space where experimentation is the driving force, and new ways of seeing emerge from the friction between disciplines.
