Weston Corey is a Richmond, Virginia native and VCU Arts Theatre alumni. Weston is joining the VCU Arts Theatre Department after working as a project manager for Barbizon Lighting Company out of their Capitol office in Alexandria, VA. He also has experience working as an installer and service tech in the commercial AV and electrical industries. In addition, he freelances for theatre companies and live entertainment entities, one of which is Riverside Center for the Performing Arts, where Weston heads up the lighting department as their production electrician. He also designs many of their shows.
After graduating from VCU, Weston served as the Lighting Director at The Sharon L. Morse Performing Arts Center, a 1000 seat road house located in The Villages, FL. He also acted as the Resident Lighting Designer at The Sharon’s second venue, The Studio Theatre at Tierra Del Sol. At The Sharon, Weston worked on shows ranging from the Beach Boys to Broadway tours. At The Studio, Weston was a part of its first three seasons, designing Proof, Bad Jews, Frankie and Johnny, Company, Red, Tell Me On A Sunday and The Story of my Life.
Weston has also worked for the Richmond Ballet as a programmer for The Nutcracker and Cinderella at the Carpenter Theatre and for the studio production of Toyshop. Weston was the lighting designer for a production of Saturday, Sunday, Monday at Virginia Repertory Theatre, directed by Carl Forsman. He has been an assistant for several designers, including Scott Zielinski for the world premier of Hamlet in Bed at Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre in New York, and Joe Doran for the co-production of Once at produced at Virginia Rep and the Fulton Theatre in Lancaster, Pa. He also has designed for many local companies in the Richmond area.
During his time at Barbizon, Weston was responsible for the overall success of installing dimming, power, controls and fixtures for lighting systems in houses of worship, schools, universities, museums and for architectural projects. Some project examples include the Hogan’s Alley film studio at the Quantico FBI facility, an architectural project for the Altria Theatre, the new proscenium theatre at St. Catherine’s School, the ‘Red is Beautiful’ exhibit at the National Museum of the American Indian, the front building façade of the Inter-American Development Bank in DC, the historic Wells Theatre in Norfolk, as well as the newly constructed performing arts centers at the College of William and Mary and Radford University.
