Associate Professor, Communication Arts
TyRuben Ellingson is an artist, educator, and entertainment designer exploring how intention becomes form and meaning—guiding students to turn imagination into reliable, impactful design.
Short bio
TyRuben Ellingson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Arts at VCUarts and has served in leadership roles including Senior Director of the Narrative Media Group and Director of the Cinema Program. Rooted in traditional fine-art practice, he later expanded into digital image-making, 3D workflows, and—more recently—creative collaboration with AI/LLMs as part of an evolving studio practice and teaching philosophy.
Prior to joining VCUarts, Ellingson built a long career in entertainment design. He served as a Senior Visual Effects Art Director at Industrial Light & Magic (1989–1995), providing conceptual design and aesthetic guidance for visual effects. As a freelance concept designer, he collaborated directly with director James Cameron on vehicle design for Avatar—work later recognized within the film’s Art Directors Guild and Academy Award–winning art direction.
Ellingson earned an MFA in Painting from Southern Methodist University, and an MA in Painting and Bachelor of Elective Studies (Art) from St. Cloud State University.
Teaching focus
Ellingson encourages students to navigate and mine possibility space—exploring broadly, iterating intelligently, and refining toward clear design intent. His teaching emphasizes:
• Advancement of interior methods: cultivating informed inner practices—attention, taste, reflection, and disciplined iteration—that consistently generate original, impactful solutions to visual problems
• Imagination as infrastructure: strengthening imagination over time as the most durable advantage in a creative career
• Fluency across tools: bridging drawing, digital craft, and 3D workflows with confidence
• Emerging tools without fear: engaging AI/LLMs as collaborative tools while maintaining authorship, taste, and rigor
