Professor Stephen Alcorn is an award-winning illustrator/author, printmaker and portraitist. Although born in the U.S., Mr. Alcorn spent his formative years in Florence, Italy. There, he attended the prestigious Istituto Statale d’Arte, an experience that left an indelible impression upon him and infused his work with a passion for bold technical experimentation in a wide range of medium and of stylistic idioms. Since then Mr. Alcorn has illustrated over 50 books, including Odetta: The Queen of Folk (2010 Parents’ Choice Award); Langston Hughes: An Illustrated Edition (1998 Carter G. Woodson Book Award); I, Too Sing America: Three Centuries of African American Poetry (Best Book for Young Adults; American Library Association) and Let it Shine (Coretta Scott King Honor Book). Alcorn’s works has been the subject of numerous international feature articles in PrintGraphisU&LCLinea GraficaGrafica & DisegnoPrometeo, and Abitare. Mr. Alcorn’s multi-faceted work hangs in numerous private collections, both in the United States and in Europe. In addition, Mr. Alcorn’s award-winning cycle of relief-block celebrating the life and times of preeminent abolitionist, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), is part of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Collection of Drawing and Prints.
