Sam Huss serves as Adjunct Professor of Trumpet at Virginia Commonwealth University. Sam has been principal trumpet of the Richmond Symphony since 2018. For his studies, Sam attended the Eastman School of Music where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree and then went on to receive a Master of Music degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. His primary teachers were James Thompson, Barbara Butler, and Charles Geyer. Sam has been a guest performer with the Detroit Symphony,  National Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony,  St. Louis Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic and the Houston Grand Opera. Sam has been an award-winning soloist in several competitions including a first prize from the National Trumpet Competition in 2013 and 2nd prize at the 2016 Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Solo competition. He was also a featured soloist with the Richmond Symphony in 2021 where he performed alongside pianist Orion Weiss for Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1 for Piano, Trumpet, and String Orchestra. When not performing, Sam loves to cook and travel with his wife Shannon.
