Sally Rath is the Assistant Professor of Costume Technology at VCU. Originally from central Texas, she holds with an associate’s degree in Studio Art from San Antonio College, a BFA in Costume Design and Production from Texas State University, and an MFA in Costume Technology at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
With her 17 years in the costume industry, Sally delves into the intricacies of costume technology with an informed eye and a varied background. She has worked at companies such as Santa Fe Opera, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Playmakers Repertory Theatre Company, Rep Stage, Texas Shakespeare Festival, Opera Saratoga, Theatre Under the Stars Houston, Theatre Aspen, and Shakespeare Under the Stars. Sally work has won recognition at USITT, KCACTF, NAPAT, and SILV. Her Academic experience includes 5 years as the Assistant Costume Shop Manager/ Adjunct Instructor at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and Graduate Student Instructor at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Outside of draping and couture costume construction, Sally’s area of interest includes incorporating Intimacy and Necessary Touch protocols into the fitting room spaces and using digital technology for costume production crafts.
