Installed at InLight 2022 in Richmond VA, “A cabin of articulaged histories” sought to link my biography, as a Malawian living in America, to that of Bryan Park’s history of anti-slavery revolt. The term articulage combines the traditional art term assemblage i.e. to assemble disparate objects; and the theoretical term articulation, i.e. how relatively autonomous structures, such as the economy and religion, are linked together and shape each other in a social formation. The objects, such as lamps and a sewing machine, assembled and housed in the cabin are material for reflecting upon biography, history, diaspora, and home.
