Cowart is currently an Associate Professor and Chair of the Dance Department at DeSales University. He has performed nationally and internationally as a company member of the Lewitzky Dance Company, The Pittsburgh Dance Alloy, and with Impact Productions. He has also performed with Elizabeth Streb/Ringside, Minh Tran and Company, and The Dance Theatre of Oregon.

In his current role at DeSales University, he has spearheaded an ongoing partnership with DanceNow/NYC that brings over 20 guest artists per year to DeSales. He also initiated the annual DeSales Screendance Festival. His research interests include modern dance partnering techniques, Dance Film, and the life, work and influence that dancer/choreographer Michio Ito has had on the early development of Modern Dance in the United States.
