Shaun McCracken serves as the Academic Advisor for all Theatre VCU students. Shaun has over 10 years’ experience as an academic advisor—first serving as the academic advisor to all first year performing arts students here at VCU, then as the Coordinator of Arts Advising for the School of the Arts.
Shaun has done pre-publication editing for articles published both nationally and internationally. As a professional dramaturg, Shaun has worked with a wide variety of artists. Shaun served as a research associate for Lynn M. Thomson (Rent) on her workshop production of the musical adaption of the Wilkie Collins novel, The Woman in White at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. Shaun has directed several plays at the Shafer Street Playhouse, including Frank McGuinness’ Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme and Brian Friel’s Translations . She was the new play and production dramaturg for David Toney’s Frankenstein: Dawn of a Monster.
Regionally, Shaun has worked at the Contemporary American Theatre Festival during their 2016 and 2017 seasons as an assistant director and dramaturg (Susan Miller’s 20th Century Blues, Ronan Noone’s The Second Girl, Chelsea Marcantel’s Everything Is Wonderful, and David Meyers’ We Will Not Be Silent). During the 2017 season, Shaun assisted in the reading of Chelsea Marcantel’s new play, The White Girl’s Guide to Joining ISIS. Shaun also directed a staged reading of Silas House’s Family of Strangers for CATF. Shaun also worked as the new play dramaturg for Lucia DelVecchio’s play Off the Rails for Magnetic Theatre in Asheville, NC. Shaun is currently working with playwright David Meyers on a new draft of We Will Not Be Silent and a new play, F**k Mark Twain.
Shaun teaches Theatre History (specialization in Irish Drama). Shaun is a member in both Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas (LMDA) and the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). She holds an MFA in Theatre Pedagogy (dual focus in Dramaturgy and Theatre History) from Theatre VCU and a BA in Theatre from Hollins University.
