Kikau Alvaro hails from San Jose, CA and comes to VCU directly from San Diego, CA where he received his MFA from San Diego State University (SDSU), which is one of only two programs offering a Masters degree in Musical Theatre. At VCU he directed and choreographed Monty Python’s Spamalot in 2017 and will direct Into the Woods in 2018. He teaches Movement for the Actor and Musical Theatre Performance. Additionally, he began “Broadway Bootcamp: VCU”, a program which brings guest teachers directly to VCU performance majors to offer performance workshops and musical theatre master classes.
Kikau is a proud member of Actor’s Equity Association. He originated the role of Captain of the Guard in Up Here at La Jolla Playhouse; a new musical written by Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Frozen), directed by Alex Timbers (Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson) and choreographed by Josh Bergasse (On The Town, Gigi). Recent performance credits include Bernardo in West Side Story with San Diego Musical Theatre, and at SDSU: Cinderella’s Prince in Into the Woods and Robert Martin in The Drowsy Chaperone. He performed classic Lerner and Loewe songs during Modernism Week as part of a celebration of composer Frederick Loewe at his estate in Palm Springs. He has also performed at the Old Globe Theatre in a concert series called Pushing the Envelope which made connections between Michael John LaChiusa and other visionary composers like Maury Yeston, Jeanine Tesori, and Adam Guettel. In addition to this, he has been a part of a New Works collaboration between SDSU and La Jolla Playhouse, portraying the role of Albert in Tony Award winner BD Wong’s new musical, Mister Doctor; and Chase Spacegrove in the new musical, On the Eve, by indie band Home By Hovercraft.
As a director/choreographer, Kikau has worked on both classics and new works. He has provided direction or choreography for Theatreworks in Palo Alto, CA in productions of: Big River (starring Tony Winner James Monroe Iglehart), The Trouble With Doug (New Works Festival), Fly By Night (World Premiere), and [title of show] (West Coast Premiere). Some of his other favorites include Shrek and Guys and Dolls (Diablo Theatre Center in Walnut Creek, CA—Shellie Award Nominations for Direction and Choreography), Lysistrata Jones (Pace University), Chicago (Marquee Productions), and Urinetown (San Jose State University). At SDSU, he was on the artistic teams for The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Into the Woods, and The Drowsy Chaperone. He directed and choreographed a production of Fiddler on the Roof at Cabrillo Stage in Aptos, CA, where he helmed critically celebrated productions of Anything Goes and Oklahoma!
Recent credits include In the Heights (Associate Director) with Virginia Repertory Theatre, and Fun Home (Associate Director/Choreographer) a co-production with Virginia Rep and Cadence Theatre Company. He has also provided choreography for It Shoulda Been You as well as the Regional Premiere of The View Upstairs at the Richmond Triangle Players, where he also serves as a member of the theatre’s Artistic Committee.
Kikau is an Associate Member of Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC) and serves as the Northeast Regional Director for Musical Theatre Educators Alliance (MTEA).
