Brian Bassett comes to VCU from Boston, Massachusetts. Brian taught dramatic literature and theatre at Beacon High School, a therapeutic special education school for students with social and emotional disabilities. Brian’s work at Beacon was encapsulated by Enemies, an anthology-style student performance featuring work from canonized writers such as Tennessee Williams and Henrik Ibsen integrated with original scenes and essays written by students in Brian’s creative writing and dramatic literature courses. Brian has also facilitated performative, problem-based theatre workshops for students at various public high schools in Massachusetts, and interned as a dramaturge for The New Repertory Theatre in Watertown, Massachusetts.
Brian is currently at work on He Cannot Live, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Richard III depicting the maladaptive coping strategies of a socially challenged aristocrat raging against the neurotypical politicians surrounding her. He holds a B.A. in English from Emmanuel College in Boston, Massachusetts.
