Harold E. North, former sculpture chair, dies at 89

The VCU Sculpture department was saddened to learn that Faculty Emeritus Harold North passed away on Monday, January 21st, 2019. Harold was instrumental in creating the Sculpture Department that we now know and love. Starting out as faculty, he took over as Chair of Sculpture in 1968 and oversaw the hiring of celebrated faculty José Puig, Myron Helfgott, Chuck Henry, Lester Van Winkle and Joe Seipel, as well as the legendary department secretary Connie Brown. Together they set the precedent for excellence (and irreverence) that we strive for in the studios to this day. Harold was a kind and generous educator and a committed object maker. He is honored each year by The Harold E. North Award of Excellence that is given to an exceptional student who demonstrates his commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Below is a description of this award, including Harold’s own words describing his practice and teaching philosophy. He will be missed.
