VCU Sculpture alumni include three MacArthur “Genius” Fellows and numerous Guggenheim Fellows. They have won Joan Mitchell Grants, Tiffany Fellowships and other major awards. Alumni attend prestigious residency programs, hold teaching positions in top schools and maintain active studio careers throughout the world. They are starting businesses, opening galleries, and changing the way artists engage with the community.
With origins dating back to the formation of the Richmond Professional Institute in 1929, the Sculpture Department at VCU has remains a vital, rigorous and ever-changing hotbed of artistic activity. From its days in a former car dealership to its designation as the top-ranked Sculpture program in the country, an extraordinary community of teachers, staff, and students have defined its success over the years.
