Opera Honored in National Competition

VCU Opera’s production of Hansel and Gretel from April 2011 has received a second place award in a national competition sponsored by the National Opera Association.

The spring production was a collaborative effort throughout the School of the Arts. It was directed by two voice faculty, Melanie Day and Ken Wood, and also featured the VCU Symphony as the pit orchestra. The Dance Department’s Judith Steele served as choreographer, and the lighting assistant and stage manager came from the Theatre Department.

The competition invites submissions of opera productions from colleges and universities around the country; VCU’s second prize is an incredible honor!
