Recognizing the strength and diversity of Virginia Commonwealth University’s research enterprise—and the faculty who drive it—a new signature event April 27 helped round out university’s monthlong Research Weeks program that spotlights innovation and discovery on campus.

VCU-ARIA—the Annual Research Impact Awards—is a new initiative that honors exceptional academic and scientific research achievements by faculty and postdoctoral fellows, celebrates their discoveries and innovative research that is improving society. Their work, and the work of their colleagues, has saved, improved and enriched countless lives through their pioneering discoveries.

Stephen Vitiello, professor and chair of the Department of Kinetic Imaging at VCUarts, was recognized for his exceptional research that enriches the human experience. His work has been featured at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

“His career exemplifies how research can illuminate fundamental scientific, cultural and technological processes while contributing meaningfully to the intellectual capital across the globe,” his nominator said.

The Excellence in Research award recognizes exceptional work that optimizes health, supports sustainable energy and environments, advances societal well-being, and enriches the human experience. Faculty honorees were awarded $5,000 each for their achievements.
