Piano graduate Allison Estabrook (BM 26’) has been selected for the prestigious Washington International Young Artist Music (WIYAM) series. The WIYAM series “selected a distinguished group of exceptional … artists from a highly competitive pool of international applicants, providing them with professional performance opportunities at prestigious cultural venues throughout Washington, D.C.”

“It means a lot to me to be accepted as part of the Washington International Young Artist Music series!” said Estabrook. The music major said she was surprised to be selected to play for the series given the large pool of applicants.
However, Estabrook plans to take full advantage of the opportunity by making connections with other young artists while pursuing her passion for classical music.
“I’m looking forward to performing among other artists who all share the same passion of creating beautiful music. Meeting fellow artists is a wonderful opportunity as we are the ones who will be bringing music into the future,” said Estabrook.
She felt ready for the audition process though.
“VCU Music helped me prepare for this position by providing many opportunities for me to perform, including convocation, masterclasses, recitals, and even performing for guest artists. I really appreciate the focus we have here on getting used to being onstage in front of people so that it becomes second nature., said Estabrook.
She noted that a big part of her education and readiness for the WIYAM was because of VCUarts’ excellent teachers, including my wonderful piano professor, Dr. Magdalena Adamek.
“She always pushes me to go to the next level and she sets the foundation for me to be able to perform on a higher level. Without her expertise, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” Allison acknowledged another “wonderful piano teacher, Dr. Maria Yefimova,” who also helped her prepare the Grieg sonata I submitted for this application.
When asked about Allison and her selection to WIYAM, Dr. Adamek expressed that “[she] always brings wonderful dedication to her piano studies and the classroom. She consistently approaches new challenges with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. Her conscientious work ethic undoubtedly inspires her peers. It’s a pleasure to have her in my studio.”
The Department of Music congratulates Allison on receiving this exciting and distinguished opportunity and cannot wait to see what your future endeavors will hold.
