This fall, decolonial designer and conceptual artist mukhtara ayọ̀tẹ́jú adékúnbi yusuf is teaching a graphic design history course that doesn’t start with Gutenberg. It moves through hand painted Ghanaian film posters, Underground Railroad quilt code, Japanese dekotora truck decoration, and other vernacular sign and pattern systems, reading them as graphic design lineages in their own right, alongside the usual Western timeline.
This is an online synchronous course held Fridays, 9 AM – 11:50 AM. It is open to all VCU students with no prerequisites.
