Participating Artists

Yasmine Abdulrahman

Marie Anderson

Marie Anderson, born in 2001, is a Virginia-based experimental animator, illustrator, and sound artist who portrays fantasies and variations of disruption, monstrosity, and memory. In their practice, they wield the obtuse, electronic intensity of horror aesthetics coupled with a quiet romance with the mundane to approach themes of gender, the fragmented self, the body-as-landscape, and introspective apocalyptic doom. Marie will graduate (tentatively) summa cum laude in 2023 with a BFA in Kinetic Imaging and a minor in Art History from VCUarts and the Honors College. They have received a departmental award of excellence and have gained professional experience from internships in the fields of animation and sound design. After graduation, they hope to begin their career in media arts commercially and privately, expanding on their portfolio and, in time, applying to festivals and residencies.

Brittany Battista

Samuel Mcminn Bautista

Samuel Mcminn Bautista, born  in 2000, originally from Washington D.C, Graduated from Duke Ellington School of the Arts in 2019. By diversifying himself in multiple mediums through their visual arts program, Samuel began to create media artworks and visuals through the lens of cameras. Emphasizing  his focus on his aesthetics, he began to find that movement reveals an inherent awareness to capturing his audience within his work, and an insight to what  echoes our own vulnerabilities.Through the years of his work capturing and creating music videos, the artist considers  the capturing and creating of new media artforms movement to be a media that directly responds to the surrounding environment. Using  everyday experiences from the artist he has collaborated with, he often found that these framed instances would go unnoticed in their original context. With a conceptual approach, he seduces the viewer into a world of ongoing equilibrium and the interval that articulates the stream of daily events. The  Moments he depicts and captures in his video exist to punctuate the human drama in expression and to clarify our existence. His work isolates the movements of humans and/or objects. By doing so, new sequences are created which reveal an inseparable relationship between motion and sound. By questioning the concept of movement, he tries to approach a wide scale of subjects in a multi-layered way, likes to involve the viewer in a way that is sometimes physical, and believes in the idea of function following form in a work.

Through different music genres in his video, disconcerting beauty emerges. The inherent visual seductiveness, along with the conciseness of the surrounding, further complicates the reception of their manifold layers of meaning.
