Call for Proposals – Experiments in Sound Summer Workshops

Call for Proposals – Experiments in Sound Summer Workshops (May 21-June 30)

Submissions for workshop proposals are due Sunday, March 4, 2018 at 11:59pm.

Sound Arts Richmond is a citywide sound arts festival presented by over 25 local organizations and institutions that span the arts, exploring a range of approaches to sound as an art medium through exhibitions, performances, and community events. As part of Sound Arts Richmond, VCUarts Department of Kinetic Imaging (video, animation, sound, and emerging media) is excited to host Experiments in Sound, a series of public workshops engaging sound in creative ways, with support from The Anderson at VCUarts and Innovative Media at VCU Libraries. This series of workshops aims to highlight the broader range of KI’s practices and bring awareness to sound art’s many approaches and applications.

Submissions
VCUarts Department of Kinetic Imaging welcomes workshop proposals on any hands-on topic engaging with sound. Artist educators are encouraged to draw inspiration from their own practice, whatever their primary medium, and to consider the use of sound in the context of other disciplines. This is a chance to create a one-of-a-kind educational experience and share something you are passionate about! We especially encourage proposals from KI affiliates including alumni, faculty/staff, current graduate/undergraduate students, and related partners.

Experiments in Sound summer workshops may be structured in any format and may focus on any aspect of the creative process. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • technical skill-building (i.e. equipment/software demos)
  • creative production techniques (i.e. field recording, creating sound for video)
  • artistic experimentation (i.e. instrument-building, live improvisation)

If applicable, proposals are strongly encouraged to incorporate a public event, such as a performance or exhibition, as a conclusion to the workshop.
