Lauren Lee McCarthy is an LA-based artist examining social relationships in the midst of surveillance, automation, and algorithmic living. She is the creator of p5.js, an open source creative coding platform that prioritizes inclusion and access, and a part of the Processing Foundation. She is a 2021 United States Artist Fellow, 2020 Sundance New Frontier Fellow, 2020 Eyebeam Fellow, 2019 Creative Capital Grantee, and has been a resident at Eyebeam, Pioneer Works, Autodesk, and Ars Electronica. Lauren’s work has been exhibited internationally, including the Barbican Centre, Ars Electronica, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Haus der elektronischen Künste, SIGGRAPH, Onassis Cultural Center, IDFA, Science Gallery Dublin, and the Seoul Museum of Art. Lauren is an Associate Professor at UCLA Design Media Arts.

This program will be moderated by Dr. Diane Derr, VCUarts Qatar’s Associate Dean for Research and Development.

Wavelength is an online lecture series that is a collaboration between VCUarts, the ICA, and VCUarts Qatar. A dynamic group of artists, designers, curators and scholars have been invited to share their work with the VCU communities in Richmond and Doha as well as the general public throughout the 2020–21 academic year. Lectures are free, but registration is required.
