Black AS/IS: A Performative Journey of Craft and Consciousness

Black AS/IS is an atmospheric trace of Blackness as an examination of what Blackness is. This lecture will explore the practices of refusal that illuminate Black life in and out of relation to an emergent visibility that considers geographic sites, embodied language and spatial strategies as emancipatory actions of liberation.

BIO
Trebien Pollard is a graduate of Florida A&M University with a BS in Mathematics Education and a MFA in Dance from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Trebien has performed with many dance companies, including Tania Isaac Dance, the MET (Metropolitan Opera Ballet) and Pilobolus. As a choreographer, Trebien’s work has been performed throughout United States, England and Japan. He has choreographed and toured, nationally and internationally, with RASA recording artist ‘Nomad’ amongst others. Currently, Trebien is an Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, as well as a licensed certified GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® personal trainer.
