VCUarts Dean Emeritus Joe Seipel worked with the school for over 40 years and was recently named a 2018 Richmond Times-Dispatch Person of the Year. Since retiring from VCUarts, he has served as interim director of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and the Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU.

That range of experience “convinces me of how good we are,” Seipel said. “The DNA of VCU – VCU is an interesting place. This is a generalization, but I think we are a school of makers,” where students become proficient with their chosen materials while also creating an artistic vision.

Seipel’s own flair for creation – which includes co-founding the artist-run 1708 Gallery four decades ago – has extended beyond the arts: He is, after all, the guy who co-founded the Texas-Wisconsin Border Cafe, a fondly remembered Fan District eatery. He even helped form a bank, River City, that became part of Village Bank.
