Hannah Bates was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Growing up in the solitude of deciduous trees and boulder-strewn rivers she developed a strong connection to her environment. She received her BFA in Fine Arts from the Columbus College of Art & Design focusing in glass, sculpture, and installation.
Through the sense of touch she explores and reacts to the transformative properties of physical materials and their ability to mimic both forms of nature and of man-made constructions. Glass is utilized in her work for its acute ability to alternate between both fluid and fragile, malleable and stiff, organic and architectural. Interested in the dynamics between the intuitive systems of nature and the logical constructions of man, Hannah’s work is a quasi-scientific investigation to understand the philosophical connection between man and land.
