Welcome Affiliate Faculty Member Shelley Roden

The Department of Kinetic Imaging welcomes affiliate faculty member, Shelley Roden! Shelley Roden is an Academy Award-wining Foley Artist who creates natural and hyperreal sounds by performing footsteps and with props in sync with the picture to enhance feature film, television, and interactive game soundtracks. Roden utilizes found objects collected throughout her twenty-year career to create authentic original aural textures to convey the filmmaker’s sonic landscape. With a focus on improvisation, Roden works with her two Foley Partners to mold, record, and layer these original sounds; taking an imaginative approach that advances the craft of Foley art.

Roden’s favorite projects include Pixar’s “Toy Story 4”, Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk”, the Netflix series “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance”, Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther”, and Rain Johnson’s “Brick”, though she has over 200 IMDb credits.

Roden has previously visited VCU as a visiting artist in Spring 2018, where her time with the Department of Kinetic Imaging had an enormous impact on students. Through a series of lectures and workshops, Roden engaged with students through Foley workshops, guiding students through a collaborative process of creating Foley.

Roden will return to Kinetic Imaging in the fall to speak about her work and present a workshop. More information to come on upcoming events featuring Shelley Roden and how you can work with this award-winning sound artist!
